Shooting range

30 August, 2008 (23:14) | Travelling!

With 10 rifles and 4 pistols in the trunk we drove to a shooting range in the Utah mountains. Most weapons were a lot of fun to shoot, I like the old style lever action .22s and the bigger SKS. The pistols loaded up with .42 magnum bullets and the big sniper rifle were pretty explosive in both sound and recoil. After schooting a sniper round the earplugs were pulled out, it took a minute before the three of us could hear anything again.

After an hour the girls showed up with drinks, very welcome as the temperature hits a 100 F. Some full soda cans were also a great target, exploding when hit by the big gun, but when hit by a small caliber just leaking. Makes you wonder how these guns do in war. The big caliber bullets just rip out an arm or leg if you’re lucky, I don’t want to know what happens when they hit your torso.

What became very clear this afternoon is that guns are totaly misrepresented in games. The sound is frightening on semi automatic rifles like the SKS, even worse with the big sniper rifle. Not one game I know comes close, games like Counter Strike are a joke.
Recoil is another story, most games show recoil by pointing the weapon up. Well, not only does your weapon go up, you loose even more control to it. Your aim is off, and you have to be incredibly good to empty a clip while shooting on target.

I would like to see a game that actually makes shooting more real. How real can it get when you see the live rounds going through your weapon, see the round casing fly out and how frightening is it to see 10 cm live ammo being shot? These bullets are huge.
